International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day

International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day

Depression is one of the most common mental health disorders across the world. Approximately 16 million people in the United States alone suffer from depression and nearly a third of the population experiences depression in their lifetime.

What is International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day?

International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day recognizes the struggle of those who have lost loved ones to suicide. They also offer support to survivors and those struggling with mental health disorder and suicidal ideation.

There are many mental health disorders that can put people at risk for suicide. One of the most common is depression. Depression is a serious disorder and can deeply affect sleeping, eating and work/school. There are many different kinds of depression including major depression disorder, persistent depressive disorder and bipolar disorder. Each of these comes with their own risk for suicidal ideation. Treatment and medication help many get better.

How Can I tell If Someone Needs Help?

There are also discrepancies between men and women when it comes to mental health and suicide risk. While women make three times as many suicide attempts, men are four times as likely to be successful. This gender disparity shows that we need to encourage more people to reach out when they are experiencing mental health issues, especially men.

There are warning signs that people might be considering suicide. These include focusing on death, putting affairs in order or taking unusual risks. If you see these signs get them help as soon as possible. It is also alright to talk to them about your concerns. This helps to encourage them to talk and seek treatment. Getting treatment cuts suicide risk greatly. Additional resources for those experiencing severe depression and mental health issues are emergency hotlines and therapy.

There are many different ways to combat mental health disorders and each patient is different. If you or someone you know is struggling with a mental health disorder, like depression or anxiety, please contact the professional team at Lifeline Connections.
