Tips to Honor Black History Month

Do you know how to celebrate or honor Black History Month?

Black History Month occurs each year in February and is a time to celebrate the achievements from the Black community. In the past two years it has become especially important to honor and stand up for all of our community members and here are some tips to help you during this important time.

Support Black-owned businesses

There are many ways to find Black-owned businesses not only to support during Black History Month but to support overall. The website Support Black Owned is easy to navigate and will find businesses based upon category anywhere across the nation.

Educate yourself

Find books or movies that will give you the history behind certain movements. You’ll be able to find anything on a subject you like. For instance if you like baseball look up the history of Jackie Robinson. If you like boxing, Google search Muhammad Ali or Joe Frazier. Similarly if you like aviation check out the Tuskegee Airmen. There is no limit to the amazing history all around us that not only will educate but will help build respect for everything the Black community has had to overcome.

Donate to an anti-racism charity

Charities seem to pop out of nowhere, especially during Black History Month or during polarizing times. Please carefully research your charity and ensure the month you give goes to the cause close to your heart and that the organization isn’t a shell for something you wouldn’t stand for.

Triggers related to history

Sometimes when you educate yourself on emotionally charged historical events it can cause triggers or anxiety. It’s important to be aware of this and take a break if needed. However, if you find you want to seek help if the heightened emotions won’t go away, we can help.
