Get Outside – It’s Park and Recreation Month!
It’s Park and Recreation Month
Did you know that July is Park and Recreation Month? Each year the National Park and Recreation Association (NPRA) brings attention to each unique local community and their parks. Meanwhile this July they want to encourage everyone to share a story about their favorite park and recreation experience.
Why are parks important?
Parks are important because everyone has a fun memory with one. Additionally, parks are the center of a community where many activities happen from farmer’s markets to birthday parties to weddings. Many local parks are also the first time a child gets in touch with nature or has a first step or first time in the water.
How did this begin?
Park and Recreation Month began in 1985. The purpose was to promote building strong, vibrant and resilient communities through the power of parks and recreation. In addition the Association wanted to recognize the more than 160,000 full-time park and recreation professionals and hundreds of thousands of part-time and seasonal workers and volunteers who maintain our country’s local, state and community parks. Furthermore, through efforts by NRPA, the U.S. House of Representatives passed an official resolution for Park and Recreation Month in 2009 and introduced the resolution in 2017 and 2018.
How can you support this effort?
July is a great time to see what your local parks and recreation have to offer and share your stories. NRPA encourages all people that support parks and recreation to share their park and recreation story on social media using #OurParkAndRecStory.
