What to Expect with Outpatient Recovery Programs

While many people benefit from residential treatment care for alcohol and drug use recovery, outpatient treatment is a viable option for many. If you aren’t quite familiar with the different treatment options, there are many ways to customize your care. However, there are only really two different base treatments: inpatient and outpatient care. Inpatient care is when the recoveree goes to a facility and stays there, away from distractions and provides a peaceful environment to reset. However, it lasts a month or more and may not be the best option for you. That’s okay, but if you are trying to decide which one is best for you or your loved one, then take into consideration these aspects of outpatient care:

Expectations remain the same. Just like with inpatient care, you will need to fill out an assessment and be a part of your process and goal-setting. You will be expected to follow through with this plan and attend any meetings to discuss your progress.

Therapy and counseling will be important factors in your care. While outpatient care is more convenient, what with your ability to work and be with your family and friends, you will still need to set aside time to attend counseling- group or individual- and meet with groups from once a month to three times a week.

The rules are usually the same. Again, even though it is not the same as residential treatment, you are expected to live your life in a way that gives you the best chance at recovery. That means abstaining from drug and alcohol use. Other rules may include how you conduct yourself during sessions as well as attendance and performance rules.

It is possible to recover, even when you are living your typical life. Even though inpatient care may be easier to get sober, it is often a challenge to transfer what you’ve learned and stay sober. With outpatient care, there may not be a transition challenge, but there are other challenges. Even in spite of these have faith and hope that that you will be able to recover if you stay in tune with your desire to live free from the cloud of addiction.
